Avatar (2009)

Plot Summary :
When his brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge's intentions of driving off the native humanoid "Na'vi" in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers intel for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na'vi people with the use of an "avatar" identity. Review :
What more to say for the highest grossing movie of all time to date, it is a highly entertaining motion picture that combines action, adventure, drama, fantasy, romance and science fiction, all blended into a visually satisfying movie. Director James Cameron has topped his previous highest grossing movie Titanic with Avatar, squeezing Titanic to the second spot after staying at the top for 12 years. Although the storyline is simple, straight forward and may not be original, and the dialogs are forgettable, I still gave it a 10 star as it is a breathtaking, extraordinary and innovative piece of visual entertainment with superb art direction, cinematography and visual effect.

All I can say is this is one of the best movie experience I have gone through as I didn't feel bored or lost focus or even realized that I have actually been sitting in the cinema for 2 hours 40 minutes because I enjoy every moment of it and it completely blew me away with the academy award winning art direction, cinematography and visual effect. The non-existing fictional world that looks real enough, with a mix of romance between the main character and the native, and a great sense of adventure experienced in the natives' world, with the main character and a few others standing between their race and the natives, Avatar creates an unforgettable emotional ride with spectacular actions and battle scenes that will captivates both your heart and visual. In short, Avatar is a very enjoyable movie with mind-blowing adventure and one of the most impressive and intricate work of art. It is definitely a must watch on big screen, and I am excited get the DVD as well as the Blu-ray Disc to enjoy this movie again from time to time.

Green Zone (2010)

Plot Summary :
Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, United 93) re-team for their latest electrifying thriller in Green Zone, a film set in the chaotic early days of the Iraqi War when no one could be trusted and every decision could detonate unforeseen consequences.

During the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad in 2003, Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon) and his team of Army inspectors were dispatched to find weapons of mass destruction believed to be stockpiled in the Iraqi desert. Rocketing from one booby-trapped and treacherous site to the next, the men search for deadly chemical agents but stumble instead upon an elaborate cover-up that inverts the purpose of their mission.

Spun by operatives with intersecting agendas, Miller must hunt through covert and faulty intelligence hidden on foreign soil for answers that will either clear a rogue regime or escalate a war in an unstable region. And at this blistering time and in this combustible place, he will find the most elusive weapon of all is the truth. - © Universal Pictures

Review :
I got to say this is a surprisingly good political conspiracy thriller as I went into the cinema without knowing about the plot and not expecting much. I went for it because Bourne Ultimatum is one of my all-time favorite and since this is from the same production crew I then decided to give it a shot, and well enough the movie gave me an enjoyable experience with a perfect mix between action and political thriller with real life stories that makes you think.

Basically the film takes us to a view on the Iraq war, with a fairly complex but relatively easy to follow plot. There are pretty much action scenes as the film started but it then slowly moved into a blend of thriller with action in between. As the plot got deeper into the conspiracy and that's where the movie got more and more interesting, I guess your focus will be more on the plot rather than the action. Although the plot is fast paced, yet it rarely pushes you to the edge of the seat, but it rather captures your interest by taking you on a journey in revealing the truth behind the conspiracy. The plot took up an intellectual viewpoint on the Iraq war and gave us something to think about on the subject of both the Iraq war and the idea of war in general, and definitely makes you think about some of the more real and worrying aspects of war and politics.

Green Zone is focused on a wider picture and so the acting is not emphasized, but the actors have delivered us the performances that are well enough for their parts. A superior political thriller that deserves top rating for its genre, it would be perfect if the shaky camera works (Paul Greengrass signature directing style) are used on reasonable occasions but not throughout the whole movie even when two people standing still are talking (it is also done on Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum though). Luckily the script is good enough to capture my attention to the story that I wouldn't care much about the shaky visual. Overall it's a pleasant and original surprise, probably not a movie for everyone, and not a classic, but it is definitely a solid piece of entertainment and something that will make you think and talk about after leaving the cinema.

The Dark Knight (2008)

Plot Summary :
With just one year having passed after taking out Ra's Al Ghul's plan to have Gotham eliminated and the mysterious disappearance of Dr. Jonathan Crane AKA the Scarecrow, and after the city was nearly plundered with his toxins, Bruce Wayne and his vigilante alter-ego the Batman, continue the seemingly endless effort to bring order to Gotham, with the help of Lt. James Gordon and newly appointed District Attorney Harvey Dent. But a new threat has now emerged into the streets. The Dark Knight faces a rising psychopathic criminal called The Joker, whose eerie grin, laughter, and inhuman morality makes him as dangerous than what he has yet to unleash. It becomes an agenda to Batman to stop the mysterious Joker at all costs, knowing that both of them are in an opposite line. Batman's struggle against the Joker becomes deeply personal, forcing him to "confront everything he believes" and improve his technology to stop him. One has no method at all and seeks to see the world plunge into the fire he has yet to light. One represents the symbol of hope and uses his own shadow to bring the peace and order he has yet to accomplish doing. - imdb.com

Review :
Wow, this movie really blows me off, and I thought Iron Man is marvelous, but The Dark Knight is by far the most stunning movie I have seen in cinema in 2008, and probably the best of the year, bravo! Excellent script plus award winning performances makes it an instant classic! The director has take this sequel to another level in all aspect (the script, the characters, the city itself, and etc.). It is dark, complex, unforgettable, and it succeeds not just as an entertaining and powerful comic book film, but as a richly thrilling crime saga. A heart pounding and hugely entertaining movie with superb performances and spectacular action.

Christian Bale still plays very well as both the charming billionaire, Bruce Wayne and the mysterious Dark Knight, Batman. But the one who steals the show here is the late Heath Ledger, who plays a scary and creepy Joker that gives you the chills during his appearance throughout the movie, though insane but brilliantly smart, the Joker challenges people's mind psychologically.  Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a better Rachel Dawes in this sequel, where she shows more sensitive and caring side towards Bruce, as well as stronger performance comparing to Katie Holmes flat performance in Batman Begins.

In short, this is a definite masterpiece, the best Batman film to date, and a brilliant comic adaptation. A solid 10 star and a must watch movie for all who appreciates top quality motion pictures. I have watch this movie twice, once in cinema during release and a few months after at home with the original DVD released by Thailand, and still I am looking forward to watch it over and over again 'cos it is a piece of art worth admiring.

The Dark Knight (Two-Disc Special Edition) (2008)

I owned this original 2-Disc Special Edition DVD which is released from Thailand and I found that this Thai version's video quality is not up to expectation as the color is not smooth and the pixel is a bit rough, if you love this movie or you are a collector I would suggest buying the U.S. released DVD or even better just get the Blu-ray Disc. This Thai released special edition DVD comes with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 English audio and is in widescreen format. The special features include:
  • Gotham Uncovered: How Christopher Nolan and his team developed the new Bat-suit and Bat-pod and composer Hans Zimmer musically characterized the Joker’s reign of chaos.

    The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

    Plot Summary :
Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover in the late 1940s. However, only Andy knows that he didn't commit the crimes. Sent to Shawshank Prison to do hard time, Andy--a taciturn banker in the outside world--has to learn to get by in the brutal, cutthroat confines of prison life. His quiet strength slowly earns the respect of his fellow inmates--most notably, Red (Morgan Freeman)--and even much of the prison staff. But Andy's seemingly stoic acceptance of his unjust imprisonment hides a fierce determination for freedom. This beautifully crafted movie features touching and sincere performances from the entire cast, with an uplifting message about humanity's indomitable spirit and the redemptive value of hope. Based on the novella RITA HAYWORTH AND SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION by Stephen King, Darabont's intriguing adaptation is easily one of the finest films of the 1990s. - rottentomatoes.com

    Review :
Easily one of the best movie of all time, also to be the best prison drama ever made. Ranked #1 to date at IMDb's Top 250 movies, The Shawshank Redemption is a standout drama, powerful, poignant, thought-provoking and no doubt my all-time favorite movie about hopes, friendship, hardships, dreams and redemption with quite some memorable lines. A movie so elegant and emotional that is perfect in its way of storytelling. A movie that is about how hope can never die. It captures my attention every single moment and touches my emotion especially towards the end of the movie. It is a simple film, yet it has an everlasting message. I've watched it 3 times yet it is still as stunning and powerful each time I watched it, definitely a fine masterpiece that should not be missed and I recommend it to all especially the working class (watch the The Sharktank Redemption in the Special Features Disc and you'll know what I mean).

There are so many excellent and meaningful dialogs in this movie, and so I have compiled some memorable quotes to share with each and everyone of you who love this movie.

    Memorable quotes :
Red : Get busy living, or get busy dying.

Andy Dufresne : Bad luck, I guess. It floats around. It's got to land on somebody. It was my turn, that's all. I was in the path of the tornado. I just didn't expect the storm would last as long as it has.

Andy Dufresne : I was in the path of the tornado... I just didn't expect the storm would last as long as it has.

Red : [narrating] There's a harsh truth to face. No way I'm gonna make it on the outside. All I do anymore is think of ways to break my parole, so maybe they'd send me back. Terrible thing, to live in fear. Brooks Hatlen knew it. Knew it all too well. All I want is to be back where things make sense. Where I won't have to be afraid all the time. Only one thing stops me. A promise I made to Andy.

Red : I could see why some of the boys took him for snobby. He had a quiet way about him, a walk and a talk that just wasn't normal around here. He strolled, like a man in a park without a care or a worry in the world, like he had on an invisible coat that would shield him from this place. Yeah, I think it would be fair to say... I liked Andy from the start.

Andy Dufresne : Maybe it's time for you to switch careers.
    Tommy Williams : Huh?
Andy Dufresne : What I mean is, you don't seem to be a very good thief, maybe you should try something else.
Tommy Williams : Yeah, well, what the hell do you know about it Capone? What are you in for?
Andy Dufresne : Me? My lawyer fucked me. Everybody's innocent in here. Didn't you know that?

Andy Dufresne : She was beautiful. God I loved her. I just didn't know how to show it, that's all. I killed her, Red. I didn't pull the trigger, but I drove her away. And that's why she died, because of me.

Andy Dufresne : [in letter to Red] Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

Red : [narrating] Andy Dufresne - who crawled through a river of shit and came out clean on the other side.

    Red : Ever bother you?
Andy Dufresne : I don't run the scams Red, I just process the profits. Fine line, maybe, but I also built that library and used it to help a dozen guys get their high school diploma. Why do you think the warden lets me do all that?
Red : To keep you happy and doing the laundry. Money instead of sheets.

Andy Dufresne : If they ever try to trace any of those accounts, they're gonna end up chasing a figment of my imagination.
Red : Well, I'll be damned. Did I say you were good? Shit, you're a Rembrandt!
Andy Dufresne : Yeah. The funny thing is - on the outside, I was an honest man, straight as an arrow. I had to come to prison to be a crook.

Andy Dufresne : That's the beauty of music. They can't get that from you... Haven't you ever felt that way about music?
Red : I played a mean harmonica as a younger man. Lost interest in it though. Didn't make much sense in here.
Andy Dufresne : Here's where it makes the most sense. You need it so you don't forget.
    Red : Forget?
Andy Dufresne : Forget that... there are places in this world that aren't made out of stone. That there's something inside... that they can't get to, that they can't touch. That's yours.
Red : What're you talking about?
    Andy Dufresne : Hope.

1967 Parole Hearings Man : Ellis Boyd Redding, your files say you've served 40 years of a life sentence. Do you feel you've been rehabilitated?
Red : Rehabilitated? Well, now let me see. You know, I don't have any idea what that means.
1967 Parole Hearings Man : Well, it means that you're ready to rejoin society...
Red : I know what *you* think it means, sonny. To me it's just a made up word. A politician's word, so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie, and have a job. What do you really want to know? Am I sorry for what I did?
1967 Parole Hearings Man : Well, are you?
Red : There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because I'm in here, or because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him. I want to try and talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone and this old man is all that's left. I got to live with that. Rehabilitated? It's just a bullshit word. So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a shit.

Red : [narrating] In 1966, Andy Dufresne escaped from Shawshank prison. All they found of him was a muddy set of prison clothes, a bar of soap, and an old rock hammer, damn near worn down to the nub. I remember thinking it would take a man six hundred years to tunnel through the wall with it. Old Andy did it in less than twenty. Oh, Andy loved geology. I imagine it appealed to his meticulous nature. An ice age here, million years of mountain building there. Geology is the study of pressure and time. That's all it takes really, pressure, and time. That, and a big goddamn poster. Like I said, in prison a man will do most anything to keep his mind occupied. Turns out Andy's favorite hobby was totin' his wall out into the exercise yard, a handful at a time. I guess after Tommy was killed, Andy decided he'd been here just about long enough. Andy did like he was told, buffed those shoes to a high mirror shine. The guards simply didn't notice. Neither did I... I mean, seriously, how often do you really look at a mans shoes? Andy crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of shit smelling foulness I can't even imagine, or maybe I just don't want to. Five hundred yards... that's the length of five football fields, just shy of half a mile.
